Sedbergh Schools Group Inaugural Triangular Sports Festival

It was a celebration of sport, friendship and community on Saturday 10 October as Sedbergh School hosted the inaugural Sedbergh Schools Group Triangular, bringing together pupils, parents and staff from Terrington Hall, Sedbergh Prep School and Ardvreck School for a memorable morning of rugby and hockey.

The event marked an exciting milestone for Sedbergh Schools Group, showcasing the opportunities created when schools come together, while celebrating the individual identities and shared values that make each school special.

Despite some early morning showers, the sun soon appeared over the beautiful Cumbrian landscape, providing the perfect backdrop for a fantastic morning of competitive sport. Pupils from all three prep schools took to the pitches with enthusiasm, determination and outstanding sportsmanship, cheered on by families, teachers, coaches and Heads from across the Group.

The morning was about much more than the results on the pitch. It was an opportunity for children to make new friendships, experience new surroundings and enjoy the excitement of representing their schools as part of a wider family.

Following the fixtures, pupils came together for traditional match teas, while parents enjoyed afternoon tea in the Hirst Centre Hospitality Suite, providing a wonderful opportunity for families and staff from the different schools to meet and connect.

Peter Grant, Head of Ardvreck School, reflected on the occasion:

“What a fabulous morning of sport in the beautiful surroundings of Sedbergh School. All games were played in a sporting manner and the parents enjoyed their visit to Cumbria! It was so lovely to see all three schools come together and give the children the opportunity to compete in such a supportive environment.”

Kate Martin, Head of Casterton Sedbergh Prep School, added:

“Days like this remind us of the strength of being part of the Sedbergh Schools Group. It was wonderful to see so many children enjoying the opportunity to compete, encourage one another and come together afterwards. The atmosphere throughout the morning reflected the very best of our shared values.”

Huw Thomas, Head of Terrington Hall, commented:

“A great day to be part of the Sedbergh Schools Group and a wonderful way to showcase some of the benefits of being part of the Group family. So many children involved in a brilliant morning of sport, all wrapped up with a joint meal afterwards. The atmosphere and values on show were first class.”

The festival coincided with Sedbergh School’s Open Day, which welcomed over 100 guests to explore the school and discover its distinctive approach to education, boarding and co-curricular life.

The atmosphere continued into the afternoon, with several visiting families staying to enjoy more rugby and watch Sedbergh School’s 2nd XV secure victory over Stonyhurst, providing another glimpse of the sporting traditions and vibrant community that make Sedbergh so special.

The inaugural Triangular demonstrated the very best of what Sedbergh Schools Group represents: expanding opportunities for children, strengthening relationships between schools and creating memorable experiences beyond the classroom.
