The review provides a powerful independent endorsement not only of Sedbergh School, but of an educational philosophy that sits at the heart of the wider Sedbergh Schools Group: distinctive schools, strong communities, exceptional opportunities and an unwavering focus on the development of the individual.
Following an extensive visit to Sedbergh, including conversations with pupils, staff and senior leaders, WhichSchoolAdvisor concludes that the School offers something “increasingly rare” within British education:
“A genuinely traditional full-boarding education where community, character and shared experience sit at the heart of school life.”
For the Sedbergh Schools Group, the review is particularly significant because it recognises the importance of a school being confident in its own identity.

The review states:
“To describe Sedbergh School as a school with boarding would be to miss the point. It is, first and foremost, a traditional full boarding school, where boarding is not an optional extra but the foundation on which the wider school community is built.”
With around 570 pupils aged 13 to 18 and the overwhelming majority boarding full-time, WhichSchoolAdvisor highlights the strength of Sedbergh’s House system and the exceptional relationships between pupils and staff.
Pupils describe their boarding houses as “home” and speak of a community where “everyone here knows each other”, while reviewers observed that Houseparents know pupils “exceptionally well” and described relationships across the School as “warm, relaxed and genuine”.
More than a school
The review also celebrates Sedbergh’s extraordinary location between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District, describing it as “one of England’s most spectacular school settings.”
Crucially, the landscape is not simply a backdrop to school life. It is an integral part of a Sedbergh education.
Outdoor education, fell running, walking, navigation, climbing, mountain biking and expedition training provide pupils with opportunities to challenge themselves, develop resilience and experience the value of shared endeavour.
As the review observes:
